Leggings are one of those wardrobe staples that can do almost anything. You can wear them to the gym, for a quick grocery run, to yoga class, or even as part of a casual everyday outfit. They are comfortable, easy to style and available in more colours and designs than most of us could need.
But there is one problem that can completely change how you feel about a pair of leggings: transparency.
See-through leggings are usually caused by a combination of things. The fabric may be too thin, the leggings may be stretched too much, or the size might be small for you. Whatever the reason might be, do not fret. In this article, we share tips to help you avoid this problem and achieve a flawless leggings fit every time.
How to Avoid See-Through Leggings
1. Choose thick fabrics

One of the first steps to take to avoid sheerness is choosing thick fabrics. When shopping for leggings, pay attention to the material and the product descriptions. You should be looking out for details like double-lined, squat proof and four-way stretch.
These features often indicate that the leggings are made for high impact activities and are less likely to become see-through even when you bend or stretch. I also recommend checking customer reviews and photos before buying. A pair can look completely opaque in a product photo and but when you get them, it tells a different story entirely.
Now I’m not saying you have to get the most expensive pair on the market, but good leggings come at a price. These days, many mid-range and affordable leggings on the market perform very well without turning sheer. And trust me, a few great pieces are better than a closet full of duds.
2. Test before buying
If you are buying leggings in a physical shop, do not judge their opacity while they are hanging on a rack. The fabric is relaxed at that point, so it may appear much thicker than it actually is when worn. To test the leggings, stretch the material gently with your hands and hold it up toward a bright light.
You can also place your hand behind the fabric and check how clearly you can see it. If you can easily make out the shape or colour of your hand, I would be cautious about buying that particular pair.
Additionally, a quick squat, bend and stretch in front of a mirror can help you check for problem areas before you add the leggings to your cart. A pair that looks opaque while standing may become noticeably thinner once the material is stretched.
3. Wear the correct size
When leggings are stretched beyond the amount the fabric was designed to handle, the fibres spread apart, and the material can appear lighter or more transparent. This is one reason a pair that looks perfectly opaque on the hanger may become see-through once you put it on.
The same thing can happen when you choose a smaller size because you prefer a more compressed appearance. I always recommend choosing the size that gives you enough room to move while keeping the fabric smooth across your body.
Your leggings should not look as though the material is being pulled to its limit. If you can see the fabric becoming noticeably lighter across your thighs or hips when you move, it may be time to try a different size.
4. Choose neutral underwear

The underwear underneath your leggings can make a huge difference to how transparent they appear. Bright colours and strong patterns are much easier to see through thin fabric. For the most discreet look, choose seamless underwear in a neutral shade like black or beige.
Black undies are great at being invisible under dark leggings, but for lighter shades of leggings, Beige is preferred. The simpler your underwear is, the less obvious it tends to be beneath a lightly coloured garment.
Seamless underwear is also useful because it reduces the chances of camel toe and visible panty lines. Look for smooth edges and lightweight fabric. If your leggings are already sheer, choosing underwear that blends into your skin can make a noticeable difference.
5. Check for thinning
Even a good pair of leggings can become see-through over time. Frequent stretching, friction and washing can gradually affect the appearance and performance of the fabric. Take a close look at your favourite leggings every few months.
Hold them up to a bright window or light and compare the fabric with a less-worn section. If the material around the knees, thighs or seat has become noticeably thinner, that is a sign that the leggings are reaching the end.
Pilling, thinning fabric and loss of stretch are also signs worth paying attention to. If your leggings no longer recover their original shape after you take them off, they may not provide the same coverage they once did. At that point, I would suggest you move them from your gym rotation and only wear them indoors.
6. Replace worn leggings
Sometimes the best way to deal with see-through leggings is to accept that the pair has simply reached the end of its life. No underwear trick or styling hack can permanently restore fabric that has become worn out.
This is especially important if you wear leggings for workouts. Squatting, stretching and other movements place repeated tension on the fabric, so activewear can show signs of wear faster than leggings worn occasionally for casual outfits.
Before replacing a pair, check where the fabric has become most transparent. If the problem is only slight and you still love the leggings, you can reserve them for lounging or wear a longer top over them. But if the material has become very thin across the seat or thighs, I would replace them with a more opaque pair.
7. Wash them properly

The way you wash your activewear can affect how long it stays in good condition. It is tempting to throw sweaty leggings into the washing machine with everything else, but checking the care label first can help prevent unnecessary damage.
Care labels are there to tell you how a garment should be washed and dried. Follow the temperature and drying instructions provided by the manufacturer. If your leggings are labelled for cold washing, for example, do not assume that hotter water will make them cleaner. Wash them as delicates, allow them to air dry, store them in a dry area and they will serve you for a long time.
Final Thoughts
Finding leggings that are not see-through is mostly about being selective. Pay attention to the fabric, check the size, test the opacity before buying and choose underwear that blends with your skin. Then give your leggings the care they need to keep the fabric in good condition.
I have also found that it helps to stop thinking of leggings as a one-size-fits-all purchase. A pair that works beautifully for lounging may not be the right choice for squats or intense workouts. Your activity should influence the type of leggings you buy.
