How to Style Activewear for Everyday Looks

Have you ever thought of wearing activewear outside the gym?

One thing I love about fashion is how fluid it is. It doesn’t care about the labels we put on clothes or the categories we place them. In fact, when it comes to fashion, the general rule is: if you can style it, you can wear it. It’s probably why gym clothes have made their way into the streets.

Everywhere you turn, there is someone wearing leggings, joggers and yoga pants as regular clothes and they look great. These athletic pieces adapt easily to different settings, which makes them perfect for busy lifestyles. So, in the spirit of crossing boundaries, I’m going to share with you all the many ways to combine your activewear into beautiful everyday outfits.

How to Style Activewear

Styling activewear isn’t an exact science, but with a little creativity, those gym pieces can easily become part of your everyday wardrobe. Below are 7 stylish ways to rock your workout clothes beyond the gym.

1. Use layers

There are a lot of great layers that can transform workout clothes into a chic outfit. Starting with one of my favourites, the blazers. A nice blazer worn with a cropped top and yoga pants can be considered business casual.

If you change to a tank top that can be tucked in, you may even have yourself a office look. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worn this comfy combo and trust me, I get compliments every time. Coats and jackets are another set of basic garments that will elevate your look and put you in a class of your own.

When you need a more cozy attire, cardigans and sweaters are up to the task. You can opt for these thicker fabrics in cold weather and switch to lightweight options when it gets warmer.

2. Change a detail

You can take an outfit from gym ready to brunch ready by simply changing one aspect of the look. Instead of a tank top wear a button down shirt on leggings. You can also exchange leggings for jeans and wear an athletic top on it.

For a trendy look, pair sweatshirts with maxi skirts. The bulky sweatshirt on a straight skirt creates a nice balance between the top and the bottom. This is a great way to take a break from wearing pants and if you want to really stay on trend, ensure you tuck the sweatshirt in the front.

Another daring outfit I’ve been seeing lately is ladies wearing gym rompers as overalls. They wear a long sleeved shirt underneath, so it looks like a jumpsuit. Although the shirt is usually a long sleeved turtle neck, I believe this look will work even with a standard t-shirt.

3. Add accessories

Want to let people know that you may be wearing active wear, but you are definitely not on your way to the gym? Make sure you are wearing accessories that change the look of the fit.

Sunglasses are the common go-to for a calm athleisure meets streetwear outfit. There are so many options of sun shades to work with from the classic blackout shades to the tinted lenses, the list is endless. Pick one that frames your face while adding an interesting element to your outfit.

You should also play around with bags because they add character to the outfit. A tote bag will give a casual or laid back vibe, while a sturdy leather bag will give you a more serious appearance. Shoulder bags are somewhere in between, making them perfect for casual events. Whichever one you choose to match your look, let it tell the story of the outfit.

4. Elevate with jewelry

It’s amazing how the right jewelry can transform an outfit. Whether it’s hoops, pearls, or a simple chain, the difference is always instant. Activewear tends to lean sporty and minimal, so jewellery is what softens the look and gives it personality.

Don’t be shy about stacking bracelets, adding bangles, or wearing a wristwatch that makes a statement. Even small pieces like rings or stud earrings can complete the ensemble. It’s those finishing touches that make the outfit stand out from the athleisure crowd.

5. Switch it up with shoes

Shoes are where we seek comfort the most, so we tend to stick to sneakers or trainers; however, other footwear are worth exploring. The same leggings and top can look completely different depending on what you wear on your feet.

Loafers or ballet flats instantly make an outfit feel refined. Heels add a touch of elegance that contrasts beautifully with sporty fabrics. Sandals keep things relaxed and effortless, perfect for warm days. And boots, especially ankle boots, add structure and edge to softer activewear pieces.

Think of your shoes as the mood setter. They guide the outfit in whatever direction you want, from casual errands to a dressed-up day out.

6. Mix texture

One of the easiest ways to make activewear look styled is by mixing textures. The contrast creates depth and keeps the outfit visually appealing. A denim jacket over spandex leggings brings structure to a sleek base. A crisp cotton shirt paired with Lycra biker shorts balances softness with stretch.

You can even throw in knits, leather, or ribbed fabrics to break up the athletic feel. When textures play off each other, your outfit looks layered and thoughtful rather than purely gym-inspired.

7. Play with colours and prints

Colour is where you can really have fun with activewear. Bold shades instantly energize a look, while neutrals keep things sleek and blended. Try placing brighter colours on one part of the outfit, like a shirt or a jacket, and grounding the rest with softer tones.

Prints also add personality, whether it’s a subtle pattern or a statement piece that draws attention. The goal isn’t to overwhelm the outfit, but to create a centre of focus. A pop of colour or print can make even the simplest activewear combo feel styled and expressive.

Final Thoughts

Activewear doesn’t have to stay confined to workout sessions. With a few thoughtful tweaks, it becomes a flexible part of your everyday wardrobe. Fashion is all about experimenting, mixing pieces, and finding combinations that feel natural to you. When styled with intention, your gym staples can carry you through errands, casual outings and everything in between.
